French Onion Soup

This awesome soup recipe will surely make your day extra special! Oh, man, you are so in for a treat! Feel free to add more ingredients if you wish. Serve this soup with toasted bread and you have yourself a meal to remember! Have a beautiful day, friends. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

1 tbsp olive oil
3 lbs onions, * approx. (about 5 or 6 medium onions)
2 tbsp light brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp butter, optional
2 tbsp all-purpose flour, optional
1 c wine (sherry, marsala, or port are good choices), optional
8 c beef stock (chicken or vegetable stock can be substituted)
1 small bunch of fresh thyme
1 bay leaf
1 tbsp kosher salt (or to taste)
1/4 tsp black pepper
16 slices crusty French bread, toasted
1 c shredded Gruyere cheese
1 c shredded mozzarella cheese

Directions:

1. Place a large pot on the stove and turn the heat to medium.

2. Add olive oil and allow it to become hot.

3. Add thinly sliced onions and sauté until translucent.

4. Add Worcestershire sauce and brown sugar. Stir until well blended.

5. Allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes and let the onions turn brown.

6. Add the garlic and sauté until aromatic.

7. Add butter, flour, and salt. Stir until well blended.

8. Add wine and stir until well mixed. Make sure to scrape the bottom to get the brown bits.

9. Add the herbs, stock, salt, and pepper. Stir until well mixed, then simmer for a few minutes.

10. Discard the bay leaf and thyme.

11. Ladle the soup into an oven-safe bowl, then top it with cheese.

12. Place the bowl inside the oven and broil for a few minutes until the cheese turns brown.

13. Serve with toasted bread and enjoy!
